Odalisque by Elen starstarstarstarstar [ - ]
The year is 1898, the setting is Prague, and the Fanged Four are taking up residence in a new town. Willow is a part of the 'family'.

Wow - what a heartbreakingly beautiful chapter! I'm not sure who's going to get hurt worse in the end here - Willow or William. I can't wait to see what's going to happen at the party - your painstakingly accurate detail when dealing with the customs of the day are fascinating.

Author's Response: This is one of my favorite Odalisque chapters. I'm a bit nervous about the next chapter. It was written in January and was originally chapter 15 back when Odalisque was 25 chapters long from start to finish. I'm worried that there is some awful continuity aspect of it that I haven't sussed out.

I'm really enjoying this story and was pleased to see Willow show some backbone when dealing with Harry. I'll be interested to see if she's going to stay in the past, if David and Harry are going to send her back somehow, if she's going to send herself back, or if the Sunnydale crew is going to find a way to get her back. I'm thoroughly enjoying both this story and Eighteen Days. Great work.

Author's Response: I'm glad this read well. It is one of the older chapters of Odalisque. As soon as I finish ED I'll be back to work on Odalisque.

Wow - there are so many things that I love about this installment - the vision sequence when Willow was in the pond, Darla following them with the dog, the end sequence with Darla tending to Willow, Dru's thoughts in the confessional....terrific. You continue to impress me with the twists and turns of this fic - I never would have suspected a pregnancy and miscarriage by Willow. And I adore the way you flesh out Darla bit by bit - she is generally underwritten or written totally out-of-character in fanfiction, but your characterization is fantastic and fascinating - it leaves me dying for the next revelation. My favorite line in this segment had to be when Dru described Willow as "more beautiful and terrible than they had any right to expect. There would be hell to pay when she understood that." As Spike would say - bloody brilliant!

Author's Response: I've probably said it before but the best surprise of writing Odalisque for me was Darla and the biggest challenge is Dru, so your praise of the confessional scene means a lot to me.

Chapter One--A Cautionary Tale of World Save-age. It isn't NC-17 yet, but I thought I'd better make it NC-17 to be on the safe side. All of the email addresses used for Willow, her friends and parents were made up for this story. Please don?t use them!

I love the story - I'm going to be so sad when it's over :-( I loved the interlude with the band and Harmony. You've don'e a great job with the characterization of all of the characters. Thank you for keeping the voices true, instead of turning them into paradies of themselves - I especially love Willow's thought-processing. I can't wait for the next part - even if it means that we're closer to the end.

Author's Response: Not as close as you might think. I've got two more chapters back from beta, a third that is almost ready to go, and I'm working on what I think is the last hundred pages. The canvas has gotten a little crowded with characters at this point, which means I'm having to write more.

Thanks for the nice, long chapter - it really made my day to see this waiting when I got home. I really enjoyed the whole thing, but especially appreciated the smaller details - like the minions being star-struck by watching Buffy, the moment when Angel realized that Spike wasn't in the room, and the crossword puzzle/trivia game that Willow and Spike created for each other (among others). Willow's relationship with Spike keeps getting more complex with each chapter and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it's going to end up.

Author's Response: I love Pete's reaction to Buffy. He's such a doof.

Yea! I was very excited to see another part of this story was out. Ooh, I can't wait to see what's going to happen when they give Spike the wrong thing - I'm guessing that the ring really contains the Gem of Amara. I'm really enjoying the continued delving in to Willow's fundamental character; the way that she works on the crossword puzzle in this episode really says a lot about her. I also really liked the playground scene and especially the insight that Buffy showed about Oz's relationship with Willow and his recognition of her difficulty with seeing Angel in the light. Great job, as usual. Can't wait until the next part.

Author's Response: I loved Buffy and Angel in this period, and I really meant to give them more relationship stuff to deal with in ED than I've gotten around to.

"I don't eat babies. They smell weird." - I absolutely love it! That is so Spike. This whole chapter is perfect. You really have all of the characterizations down. The interaction between Buffy and Angel is fantastic; there is so much going on all at once - the whole sunlight issue, the planned 'bait and switch', Buffy's idea about cutting off Spike's head, and Angel's realization that his and Giles plan would never meet Buffy's approval. The ending which, at first glance, almost seems like a throwaway scene, is terrific. I think that you perfectly described Xander's resentment of Angel; so many authors either make it seem unreasonable or just overwhelming, constant hostility - like Xander is either caught in his initial jealousy of Angel or in the moment that they discovered that he was back. I always thought that everyone else forgave him too quickly and I love that Xander even resents it when Angel does the right thing - and recognizes what he's doing at the same time. Oz's observations about Joyce and his own mom were a great reminder that these characters are still very young and have real lives outside of 'slaying'. I'll be interested to see if the full moon really will keep Oz out of the equation or if he will be there and sense what's been happening between Spike and Willow (which gets more fascinating all the time). Great job, as usual. I can't wait to see how it all plays out - will Georgia and Colin be back? will Spike be able to keep his word and let Willow go? what will Buffy do when she realizes that Giles and Angel put Willow in danger? Of course, maybe I don't want to know how it turns out, since that will mean that it's over. No, I really do want to know. We'll just have to be for a sequel :-)

Author's Response: I wanted to do more with the end of the chapter. I really wanted to get more of a feeling of the let down of finding the Gem of Amara. They put a lot of work in on it, and it isn't over. This is the first time in a while that the Sunnydale gang hasn't had anything to do but wait for Spike to call them. Georgia and Colin will definately be back.

*beg* for a sequel - I can't even type any more.

Author's Response: I need to finish Odalisque first, but I think there is a sequel somewhere in the hundreds of after ED pages that are on my hard drive.

Yeah! I was beginning to despair - I thought that maybe "real-life" had irrevocably kicked in and we were in for a long dry spell. This was definitely a chapter worth waiting for. I love all of the character interactions and thoughts. I especially thought that you did a great job with Giles and his ruminations both on who would they would be better off giving the Gem to and if he could actually get angry with Spike. You are the only one that I know that has ever considered the possibility of Angel becoming Angelus sometime after he has the Gem of Amarra and what a disaster that would be. The scene between Willow and Spike at the end is just beautiful - I love that you never turn her into an expert in the art of sex. Many other stories have Willow turn out to be a natural at the whole "art of pleasing a man-vamp", which isn't unenjoyable, so much as it is out-of-character for her. I love that she is still distressed by her attraction for Spike and his ability to make her want him. I can't wait to see what's going to happen to them in the end - I'm still not sure if I want to see her turned and with Spike or if I want to see you delve into her relationship with the Scoobies after her ordeal - but I know that whatever you decided to do with them, it will be beautifully written and perfect.

Author's Response: Real life and a bit of writer's block. Sorry about the long delay between updates. I love writing for Giles. His is the most adult perspective, and that's an interesting role to play with. One of the things that I wanted to explore with Angel was the notion that he has not quite found himself in his new life. I thought it was something that was ignored when ATS started. They fool around a bit with the idea that he needs to be more connected, and we really don't see him struggling with his personal ethics until S2.

The authors own nothing. Joss, UPN, WB, etc. own Buffy, the show, the characters, the places, and the backstory. The authors own any original plots.
